Taking Control of the Wheel, Your Money
09.30.2009
When the going gets tough, the tough slow down and put everything into perspective. Yes, that’s right; I said ‘slow down.’ As members of the trucking industry face unique obstacles during economic hardships; the key to staying afloat lies in being proactive and progressive with your actions. For instance, let’s take the soaring price of diesel fuel. Some proactive measures in fuel conservation involve truck up-keep and conscious driving. As tire pressure has received much publicity in the national spotlight, it is important to remember that under-inflated tires will be detrimental in fuel conservation, but more importantly, over-inflated tires may be detrimental to your safety.
Another measure involves the aerodynamics of the truck. Modern times have successfully yielded add-ons for trucks that make them more aerodynamic, which allow the vehicle to travel more efficiently. Freight wings reduce aerodynamic drag at the bottom and in the front of the trailer. These wings can save thousands of dollars per year. Active air-flow control techniques are other ways to reduce aerodynamic drag. The system continuously blows air over curved aerodynamic surfaces at the rear of the trailer. These jets of air smooth out the air that blows against the truck and ultimately reduces aerodynamic drag. These systems of reducing aerodynamic drag do ultimately cost money but could potentially save thousands of dollars in the long run.
Another important factor in saving money relies on mapping out assignments as to not waste fuel. Social networking websites for the trucking industry known as Load Boards also allow truckers to find more assignments easier, with little to no money involved. These Load Boards can potentially help add assignments on to an already mapped out trip.
I hope these suggestions have helped. Happy Savings!
